University of Idaho Faculty Senate Meeting Voting on Changes

By Nicole Hindberg on December 4, 2018

University of Idaho President Chuck Staben will again preside over the University faculty meeting from 3-4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, December 5, 2018. Various university policies will be voted on including state and federal mandates regarding reporting sexual harassment including, but not limited to, general responsibilities of instructors in those situations.

This is the first meeting of the year regarding these issues after the Athletic Department mishandled a sexual assault claim in 2013. The claim resurfaced last year when the student came forward, resulting in the firing of the athletic director. The university has apologized for the mishandling of the situation, however, students are still not pleased with what they did to fix the situation.

The faculty senate will also discuss possible changes to the 2019-2020 academic calendar, campus law enforcement and crime reporting, education prevention and response to sexual assault, reporting incidents of violent or threatening behavior, identity and access management in regards to online courses, and identity theft protection of students as well as faculty members.

There will be light refreshments after the meeting is over.

They are encouraging participation from students to give insight on those various topics because these directly affect them. There has been much outrage over the handling of sexual assault claims at the University of Idaho in the last few years. There has also been controversy over other issues they will be discussing. President Staben says that he “wants to make a change”.

There will be a live webcast for those who can’t attend but still want to be involved. They want you to send questions by email to president-questions@uidaho.edu if you can’t make it. There will also be Zoom options available on the faculty senate website. To access that just search it on the University of Idaho website at www.uidaho.edu.

They want as much student participation as possible; they’d rather in-person questions than emailed questions to allow room for debate and discussion. There can’t be much of a discussion if all the questions are online. It’s time for students to have their voices heard directly. If that at all interests you, this is the time to have your voice heard.

So please consider coming to the event if you want to see change regarding topics such as our universities response to sexual assault, reporting incidents of violent or threatening behavior, Vandal access regarding online classes, state and federal mandates regarding sexual assault, and more.
