Vandalism Over the Weekend at the University of Idaho

By Nicole Hindberg on December 11, 2018

Students at the University of Idaho have a reputation for being respectful to their faculty members. However, there was an isolated vandalism incident that involved the targeting of certain faculty members. This week, one building on the University of Idaho campus was vandalized. Over the weekend, someone vandalized a building of the Administration Building, home to the College of Letters, Arts and Social Sciences staff and faculty.

According to the Journalism and Mass Media Administrative Specialist Diane McGarry, the person who vandalized the building tore down posters and papers on the walls of the Administration Building. Although it wasn’t a substantial amount of vandalism, it is still very inconvenient to the busy College of Letters, Arts and Social Sciences faculty and staff, especially this close to the end of the semester.

The papers were strategically scattered across many halls and pushpins were scattered up and down the stairs. The person or persons who did this also broke into the office of Omni Francovich, administrative coordinator for the Department of Politics and Philosophy, and dumped all the mail from the mailroom across Francetich’s office. They also tore up and scattered papers from her desk across the room. They even knocked over items on her shelves, such as her personal books and knick-knacks. Francetich was not the only faculty member that was affected by this. Others were unavailable for comment. The Department of Politics and Philosophy, the History Department, the Department of Modern Languages and Cultures, and the School of Journalism and Mass Media were the ones who were affected.

Faculty members are confused as to why someone would do this. Nothing was stolen, and the vandalism was very minor. They were almost taunting the faculty members for some reason. McGarry and Francetich don’t think this will escalate into a dangerous situation, however, they are still taking this matter very seriously. Just as any form of vandalism or disrespect, the University is investigating the situation and will handle it accordingly.

This was a very minor crime; however, the faculty members are still very much affected by this. McGarry described this event as “senseless” and “incredibly disrespectful towards hardworking employees.” The vandalism was cleaned up before classes began. Very few students saw the vandalism, therefore there has not been much concern over this issue or if there will be another related incident.

McGarry notified the student body through email but did not ask for possible information that will help catch the ones who did this.
